Kippah Revolution
I’ve been talking (thinking, writing, mostly just in my own world) about how I want desperately to nurture a movement of young Jews, actively observant liberal Jews, men and women, who are comfortable wearing kippot and tzitzits in public. I was thinking about this today as I rode the subway home from my talmud class and I caught sight of my reflection in the subway window… curled up as I tend to sit on an uncrowded train, in the corner of a backward facing seat perpendicular to the wall, wearing a thrift-store leather jacket and a green patterned kippah from a folk music festival, unkempt curly brown hair falling around my face… and I thought of something that Jason said to me a few weeks ago.
Orthodox Jews are distinctive. They stand out visually in a crowd. Not only that, but you can tell by the nuances of their dress or the style of kippah that they wear what their community associations or even political affiliations might be.
This is what I want for Kippah Revolution. We are a style of Jew. We are a flavor. We know who we are and we are not afraid to show it. And we have more style than the Hareidim.
To be developed.
